We often get asked by pool shoppers, what is our lowest cost pool? My answer often is it depends! The answer is a little more nuanced than a simple answer. The real or true cost of a pool in my opinion is based on not only the pool but the long-term cost of ownership as well. This factor can really sway your choice for the type of pool you may end up with after you digest the data.

So to help potential pool owners, we have put together a list of typical costs of each type of swimming pool and have included the ever-elusive long-term costs of ownership for each type of pool as well. We are removing all the barriers and giving you all the info you could ever need to make an informed choice when purchasing your new pool.

THE SPECS:

To simplify the process we will be using the same size pool for every type of pool. The pool equipment setups will be the same as follows

Pool Dimensions: 16'x32'

Pool Equipment: Pentair SuperFlo VS Pump, Pentair Master Temp 250, Pentair Clean & Clear 320 Cartridge Filter System, Pentair Bioshield UV Sanitizer, Pentair Pool Light, Pentair Prowler 320 Robotic Pool Cleaner, Start-Up Chemicals, and Basic Maintenance Kit

ABOVE GROUND POOL COST:

To some, Above Ground Pools may seem like the lowest cost option of pool ownership and that may be the case if we are talking about the Intex Style pool, but we are talking about a permanent above ground pool professionally installed. By the time you factor in the pool, the installation, the gas service, the electrical, the bonding, and a deck to get into your pool you may be surprised by the actual cost.

Above Ground Pool Package with installation: $19,000.00

Electrical service to pool equipment $3,500.00

Gas Service to pool heater $2,200.00

Liner Replacement every 5 years at $3,000.00 each time for 10 years $6,000.00

Composite Pool Deck: $30,000.00

Total cost of ownership over a 10 year period: $60,700.00!

Electrical Service to the pool equipment: $3,500.00

Gas Service to the pool heater: $2,200.00

Liner Replacement every 5 years @ $6,000.00 each time for 10 years $12,000.00

Repair to rusted pool panels $1,500.00

800 square feet of concrete pool deck $8000.00

Total cost of ownership over a 10 year period $63,200.00

Gunite Pool in Sturgeon Bay WI
Concrete Pool in Strugeon Bay WI

CONCRETE POOL

This pool type is typically the most common type of all 3 pools

Concrete Pool: $52,000.00

Electrical Service to the pool equipment: $3,500.00

Gas Service to the pool heater: $2,200.00

Resurfacing pool every 10years @ $17,000.00 each time for 10 years $17,000.00

Repair to waterline tile $3,800.00

800 square feet of concrete pool deck $8000.00

Total cost of ownership over a 10 year period $79,300.00

R Series Fiberglass Pool by River Pools
River Pools R Series Fiberglass Pool

FIBERGLASS POOL

This pool is quickly becoming the most sought after pool on the market.

Fiberglass pool with installation $55,000.00

Electrical Service to the pool equipment: $3,500.00

Gas Service to the pool heater: $2,200.00

800 square feet of concrete pool deck $8000.00

Total cost of ownership over a 10 year period $68,700.00

As you can see the above-ground pool is the lowest cost option for a permanently installed pool, but it is not that far off from an in-ground vinyl lined pool. The difference from the vinyl in-ground pool to the fiberglass is not that big of a jump either. Lastly, the concrete pool in some people's eyes may look like a "bobby dazzler" but is actually a "money pit" when it comes to the long term costs to maintain it. Pardon the Oak Island reference. #favoriteshow. There are clear pros and cons to each of these types of pools other than just the cost. Take a look at our other article about the pros and cons of each type of pool. Hopefully, this info will help give potential pool owners a true look at the costs of all 4 types of swimming pools.
